About me
Well, where do I start? I was born in 1964 and raised in East London, my teens saw me go through 'many' musical phases, from Punk to Reggae to Soul and back again, most of the youth clubs in those days played a wide variety of music and it wouldn't be out of place to hear sounds like Killing Joke played back to back with the O'Jays!
I suppose my real interest in Soul & Jazz occurred when I met Janice (now my wife) when she dragged me off to Dingwalls one Sunday afternoon. The event was called 'Talkin Loud' and it was hosted by Gilles Peterson & Patrick Forge. I can only say that the music that Iheard that day changed my entire life, this was Jazz with an attitude alongside Rare Groove to die for! Oh and the Jazz dancers - wow! None of that armchair 'smooth jazz' here mate! We ended up there most weeks and my record collection began to blossom. The same venue also hosted a monthly 'all nighter' event called 'Stomp' the flavour here was Northern/Modern soul, with DJ's like Bob Jones & Richard Searling. The soul played here was sublime and most of it very rare, so rare in fact that the only way to hear those tunes was to go to the club or re mortgage your house.
My local soul event was The Lacy Lady in Ilford, Essex, hosted by the legendary DJ Chris Hill, along with the Froggy at the Town Hall and Oscars. It was inevitable that I would soon be off to various 'Soul Weekenders' such as Caister and Southport, I must say that I probably spent most of my time in the smaller rooms at these events; the music was more up my street.
My 'wants list' was growing and my pursuit of finding those ecclectic gems led me to many record shops and dealers, such as Crazybeat, Mr Bongo, SoulJazz, Bluebird, Jifs and Soul Brother. Those places along with the club scene are where I cut my teeth. Being on good talking terms with the DJ's and the dealers was proving to be successful and my collection grew.
I took up the offer of becoming a resident DJ (alongside Micky & Jay) at a club in Ilford called 'RBs'. The Friday event was called PayBack and it was very successful, it also funded my record buying habit! I then went on to become resident DJ at Corks in Ilford alongside my good friend Abby.
So why this site? Well, over the past couple of years I have been ripping a lot of my vinyl to MP3 and downloading a hell of a lot music from various sources, I am constantly getting requests from people who want to hear this stuff, so I decided to use the technology to make it available! Each Podcast will take on a theme and I will be exploring all facets of Soul and Jazz in the hope of bringing some musical enjoyment into your life!
